Researchers are investigating the effect of a processed blood product called liquid platelet-rich fibrin (S-PRF) on healing after treatment for severe gum disease (periodontitis stages II-IV). The study compares the healing benefits of this blood-derived biomaterial against the standard treatment alone, which includes scaling and root debridement (deep cleaning) of diseased gums. This is a Phase 2 clinical trial including adults with symptoms of gum disease such as bleeding, gum recession, tooth looseness, and bad breath. Participants will first undergo dental exams and X-rays to determine eligibility. Those included will receive oral care instructions and have molds taken of their jaws. During one appointment, their gums will be cleaned with scaling and root debridement under local anesthesia. Then, 20 ml of blood will be drawn and processed into liquid S-PRF, which will be used to flush the treated gum pockets on one half of the mouth. The other half will be flushed with sterile saline for comparison. Follow-up visits will occur monthly for 3 months to monitor healing. Throughout the study, participants will have assessments including periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment level, and number of bleeding sites measured before treatment and at 3 months post-treatment. Researchers will monitor healing progress and safety, with follow-up care provided as needed beyond the study period. The total participation time is about 3 months, with free treatment and travel stipends offered to participants.
