Researchers are evaluating the rate, risk factors, and outcomes of complications related to extubation in adult patients after general anesthesia or critical illness. This international, multicenter, prospective cohort study focuses on extubations performed in operating rooms, other anesthesia locations, and intensive care units. Extubation is a common but skilled procedure that can lead to serious adverse events like severe hypoxemia, cardiac arrest, brain damage, or death if complications arise. The study observes adult patients undergoing extubation of an endotracheal tube during a specific enrollment period. It aims to collect data on the frequency of immediate and mild extubation complications, adherence to clinical practice guidelines, and associated patient and procedural risk factors. No treatments or interventions are administered as part of this observational study. Participants are monitored for complications occurring within 60 minutes after extubation, including severe hypoxemia, cardiac arrest, or need for airway management. Researchers will also assess the relationship between extubation complications and outcomes until hospital discharge. The study collects data on clinical practices and guideline adherence to better understand preventable extubation complications and improve patient safety.
