Sarcopenia, a condition characterized by loss of muscle mass and function, is common in patients with chronic liver disease, especially those with decompensated cirrhosis. It is linked to increased mortality and complications like hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, and infections. This research investigates how Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS), a procedure used to treat portal hypertension, may improve sarcopenia and explores the underlying mechanisms, focusing on the role of serum Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21).
