Researchers are evaluating a virtual 24-week culturally tailored physical activity program aimed at improving physical activity and metabolic health to prevent breast cancer in first-generation South Asian Indian immigrant women aged 40 to 65 years. Breast cancer develops 5 to 10 years earlier and is more common among these women, especially those with metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions like hypertension, insulin resistance, and central obesity. About half of these women do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines, and cultural and logistical barriers reduce participation in traditional exercise programs. The study randomly assigns 96 women to one of four groups: use of an enhanced physical activity monitor (Fitbit watch with mobile app), participation in twice-weekly 60-minute Bollywood-style group dance sessions conducted virtually, a combination of both the activity monitor and dance sessions, or a usual care control group. The interventions last for 24 weeks and are designed to be culturally relevant and convenient, addressing common participation barriers like transportation and time constraints. Participants will be monitored for changes in daily steps and time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity at weeks 12 and 24 using activity trackers and self-reports. Researchers will also assess metabolic measures including blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids, body mass index, and waist circumference. The study includes virtual sessions, use of wearable devices, and regular assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the physical activity interventions in reducing metabolic risks linked to breast cancer. Safety screening and medical clearances are part of the process to ensure participants can safely engage in physical activity.
