What this Trial Is About

Researchers are developing a neural network to calculate the three-dimensional shape of the palate in infants with cleft lip and palate deformities. This study aims to reduce the treatment burden for these conditions by using routinely collected data from patients treated at the University Hospital Basel. The neural network will analyze palatal casts and photographs to compute 3D palatal geometry from single images. The study involves collecting data such as palatal casts and intraoral photographs that are routinely taken during patient care. These data include plaster casts, intraoral scans, and corresponding images of the cleft palate from patients treated between 1970 and 2025. This observational study does not involve any interventions or treatments but focuses on data analysis to develop the neural network. Participants provide existing palatal data which researchers will analyze to develop and validate the neural network. The primary outcome measured is the 3D palatal geometry at baseline, computed from the collected images and casts. There are no additional treatments or procedures for participants, and the study involves reviewing existing patient data collected during routine care.
