What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying adults undergoing elective procedures with spinal anesthesia or peripheral nerve block who receive intravenous propofol sedation to see if listening to music through closed-back headphones affects dreaming and the sedation experience. The trial compares preferred music chosen by the patient, matched non-preferred music, and silence to explore whether music increases dream recall and if preferred music leads to more pleasant dreams. The goal is to find out if a simple music intervention can enhance sedation quality without compromising safety. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three groups preferred music, matched non-preferred music, or silence. Music or silence begins 1-2 minutes before sedation and continues throughout the sedation period using identical headphones. The preferred music group listens to a personally chosen track, while the matched group hears a pleasant but non-selected track similar in genre and tempo. The silence group wears headphones without audio to control for headphone use and expectancy. After sedation, participants undergo a standardized interview within 60 minutes of recovery to assess dream recall and pleasantness. Additional evaluations include dream content, patient satisfaction, sedative and opioid use, hemodynamic changes, pain, nausea, recovery time, and adverse events. Assessors remain blinded to group assignments. This study aims to improve the subjective sedation experience and inform possible routine use of music during sedation.
