Feasibility Study of a Nurse-Led Physical Activity Program for Adults With Cancer in an Oncology Day Clinic

Researchers are evaluating the feasibility and potential effects of a nurse-led physical activity program called OncoMoveNurse for people with cancer receiving outpatient care. The study focuses on improving physical activity behavior, self-efficacy, well-being, and mood during systemic cancer treatment. This mixed-methods study is conducted in an oncology day clinic setting and aims to understand how nurses can promote an activity-friendly culture to help patients stay active despite treatment challenges. The OncoMoveNurse program consists of five key components a modular exercise catalogue, safety protocols, communication strategies, team collaboration, and person-centered care. Supporting materials such as posters, videos, and exercise tools have been developed. The study spans 15 months, including preparation, implementation, and evaluation phases. Nurses lead the implementation with training and feedback sessions, and the program is integrated into routine outpatient care. Data collection includes patient-reported outcome measures and qualitative methods like digital storytelling and focus groups involving patients and healthcare professionals. Participants will be engaged during their outpatient visits where they receive support from oncology nurses to increase physical activity safely. Researchers will collect quantitative data on physical activity levels, self-efficacy, and quality of life, alongside qualitative feedback. All data are anonymized and analyzed to assess program feasibility and effects. The study runs from October 2024 through December 2025, with patient data collected mainly between June and September 2025. This research aims to inform future physical activity promotion in oncology outpatient care.
