What this Trial Is About

This research aims to understand whether firefighters exposed to hazardous compounds have an increased chance of developing premalignant blood conditions that could lead to blood cancers and other health problems. The study focuses on firefighters aged 40 to 49 with at least five years of work experience at the Charlotte Fire Department. It evaluates specific blood changes known as clonal hematopoiesis and monoclonal gammopathy that might indicate early signs of blood-related diseases. Participants will provide blood samples and buccal swabs during a baseline visit to test for clonal hematopoiesis and monoclonal gammopathy using advanced sequencing and blood analysis techniques. Those who consent will also have their samples stored for future research. If abnormalities are found, participants may receive referrals for further diagnosis and standard care follow-up as needed. Throughout the study, participants complete a firefighter history assessment, and their test results are reviewed to identify any premalignant states. The primary outcome is the detection of clonal hematopoiesis within approximately six months after enrollment. Secondary outcomes include monoclonal gammopathy results available in about one week, rates of related diagnoses up to a year later, and baseline survey data. The study involves ongoing monitoring and follow-up per medical guidelines, lasting up to 12 months after lab tests.
