Evaluating a Personalized Rehabilitation Program for Adults with Esophageal or Gastric Cancer Undergoing Surgery in Southern Sweden

Researchers are evaluating a model for systematic and evidence-based rehabilitation tailored for people with esophageal and gastric cancer. The goal is to improve quality of life and reduce cancer-related symptoms by addressing individual needs during the cancer care process. This approach recognizes that rehabilitation needs vary based on personal circumstances, social support, and specific cancer types, aiming to better integrate rehabilitation into clinical care. The study involves two groups an experimental group receiving structured, personalized assessments and evidence-based rehabilitation based on physical, psychological, and social needs, and a historical control group consisting of patients who underwent surgery between 2013 and 2021. Participants are adults diagnosed with esophageal or gastric cancer, living in Southern Sweden, and planned for curative surgery at Skne University Hospital. Participants will complete various questionnaires and assessments at several time points at the start of treatment decisions, about one week before surgery, and at 6 and 12 months after surgery. These assessments include quality of life, physical activity, psychological distress, rehabilitation needs, and other health-related measures. The study will monitor patients progress to evaluate the effectiveness of the rehabilitation model over time, with the total study period extending through 2027.
