What this Trial Is About
Researchers are developing a culturally tailored digital resilience-building intervention to help East Asian immigrants with cancer engage in advance care planning (ACP) discussions with their family caregivers. The study addresses low advance directive completion rates among East Asian Americans, which may contribute to disparities in end-of-life care, including hospice use and unwanted aggressive treatments. The research involves understanding barriers and facilitators related to ACP discussions through interviews with religious leaders and pairs of immigrants and caregivers. The study includes two main parts: semi-structured interviews with 30 religious leaders who provide spiritual care to Asian American immigrants from China/Taiwan, Japan, and Korea to explore challenges in discussing ACP and death; and the development of digital resilience-building materials tailored to cultural needs. These materials introduce ACP and resilience skills addressing cultural beliefs and barriers. The intervention will be tested with 27 pairs of East Asian immigrants with cancer and their family caregivers. Participants will engage in think-aloud interviews where they use the digital materials and provide feedback immediately after. Researchers will assess the usability and acceptability of the intervention right after these sessions. Participation involves reading and responding to questionnaires in English or relevant East Asian languages or dialects. The study is sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago, with participant ages ranging from 18 to 80 years.
