What this Trial Is About

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, with many survivors experiencing mental impairment or dementia. This research aims to understand how social and lifestyle factors influence the risk of mental impairment after a stroke. The study uses data from individuals who had a stroke and were previously enrolled in the NIH Natural History of Stroke study to explore these relationships. Participants in this observational study will have one telephone visit lasting about 45 minutes. During this call, they will discuss their health since their stroke and answer questions about factors such as race, education, ethnicity, employment, marital status, residence, recent health history, and medical insurance. Researchers will also review previously collected brain imaging and medical data from the earlier study. Participants will complete cognitive tests that assess memory, attention, language skills, and number and word recall. Researchers will analyze how social determinants of health relate to stroke recovery and present-day cognitive function. The primary outcome is post-stroke function measured by the NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), with secondary outcomes including present cognitive function. The study will run until February 2027, with only one phone visit required.
