What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the StandUPTV Habits program, a mobile health study designed to maintain reductions in evening sedentary screen time (eSST) over a 12-month period. The study targets adults at risk for type 2 diabetes and uses a novel habit formation strategy to support sustained behavior change. It aims to explore how reducing eSST relates to metabolic health, laying the foundation for a future larger clinical trial that will assess impacts on diabetes and cardiovascular disease risks. The study involves two intervention groups using the StandUPTV application, which monitors and helps reduce sedentary screen time. The app features include electronic screen lockout when limits are reached, personalized planning tools, text message reminders, and opportunities to earn screen time by engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity. One group receives the app alone, while the other combines it with personalized action plans, daily alerts after 30 minutes of evening sedentary screen time, and financial incentives to encourage active non-sedentary behavior. Participants will use provided devices including a Fitbit Charge 4+ and Wi-Fi-enabled smart plugs throughout the study. They will be monitored at baseline, 4 months, and 12 months for changes in sedentary screen time, physical activity, sleep quality, glucose metabolism, and HbA1c levels. Data will be collected via wearable devices and app monitoring, with participants receiving coaching and feedback through the app and text messages. The study duration is 12 months, with ongoing support and tracking to assess habit maintenance and health outcomes.
