What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying how different teaching methods affect the training of orthopedic surgeons in performing proximal femoral fracture osteosynthesis. The traditional apprenticeship model faces challenges due to work-hour limits, patient safety concerns, and limited supervisor availability. Simulation-based training SBT has become popular as a safe way for surgeons to improve their skills without risking patient safety. This study focuses on comparing the usual one-on-one instructor training with a dyad two-on-one instruction approach to see if the latter is equally effective. The trial compares two groups one receiving standard one-on-one instruction during virtual reality SBT for hip fracture surgery, and the other receiving dyad instruction where two trainees learn together with a single instructor. Both groups use the same amount of instructor time. The study involves practicing techniques such as antegrade nailing, dynamic hip screw, Hansson pins, and cannulated screws, with mastery standards established for these procedures. Participants will undergo regular two-hour self-training sessions until they reach mastery or up to four months. Researchers will track the number of sessions needed to reach mastery, hands-on training time, test scores during training, failure rates, and calendar time to mastery. This monitoring helps evaluate whether dyad instruction can maintain training quality while reducing instructor workload. The study is sponsored by the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation and includes doctors early in orthopedic training.
