Ultrasound and Clinical Study of Airway Features in Nonpregnant, Normal Pregnant, and Preeclamptic Women Undergoing Surgery

Researchers are studying airway assessment in three groups non-pregnant women, pregnant women with normal blood pressure, and pregnant women with preeclampsia undergoing various surgeries under general anesthesia. The study aims to compare clinical and ultrasound airway indices and laryngoscopic views to better predict difficult intubation, which can cause complications during surgery. This prospective observational study focuses on finding simple, non-invasive methods to improve airway management in pregnant patients, especially those with hypertensive conditions. The study involves assessing airway indices using clinical parameters and ultrasound imaging before anesthesia induction. It includes three groups non-pregnant patients, normotensive pregnant patients, and preeclamptic pregnant patients, all undergoing surgery under general anesthesia. The ultrasound assessment is performed just before the induction of anesthesia and intubation to evaluate airway structures such as tongue thickness and hyoid bone visibility. Participants will undergo ultrasound and clinical airway assessments preoperatively, including laryngoscopic view evaluation before intubation. Researchers will measure ultrasound airway parameters immediately before anesthesia and intubation to identify difficult airway cases. The primary outcome is the superficial ultrasound airway assessment, with secondary measures including laryngoscopic view, tongue thickness, and hyoid bone visibility. The study is expected to run until December 2026, with participant ages between 18 and 50 years.
