Improving Self-Care Skills for Farmers and Fishermen with Cardiometabolic Diseases Using Educational Materials and a Board Game to Support Health

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating the self-care abilities of farmers and fishermen who have cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, and type 2 diabetes. This study combines nursing scholar Dorothea Orems self-care theory with the American Heart Associations Life Essential 8 concepts. The goal is to understand how well this population manages their conditions and to develop educational materials and tools tailored to their socioeconomic background to improve their health outcomes. The study includes an intervention where participants receive self-care teaching materials and may participate in a Monopoly board game program designed to enhance their learning. In the first five months, assessments of self-care ability and biochemical markers are conducted, followed by educational sessions and group board game activities led by trained community leaders. Telephone follow-ups occur every two months between months seven and twelve. The control group receives only the standard community care model with referral treatment and self-care manuals. Participants will be farmers and fishermen aged 18 to 75 years who can care for themselves and communicate in Taiwanese or Mandarin. The study involves assessments of self-care ability, biochemical indicators, and treatment status, with ongoing evaluations and support throughout the year. Researchers will measure the reduction in cardiometabolic risks through improved self-care ability over 12 months. The study aims to produce effective, culturally appropriate educational tools to support health bureaus and primary healthcare units in this community.
