AI-Summary

What this Trial Is About

This research focuses on patients undergoing elective open midline incisional hernia repair, specifically those with hernia defects between 4 and 10 cm wide. The study aims to evaluate a protocol for measuring abdominal pressures during the perioperative period of hernia repair. Midline incisional hernias are common and pose a significant health challenge, with high recurrence rates especially in obese patients and after repeated surgeries. Participants will have muscle and intra-vesical pressures measured at specific points during surgery. Measurements will be taken after anesthesia induction, before skin incision, after completing hernia repair with mesh placement, and after skin closure. The study includes use of pressure probes in the transversus abdominis muscles and rectus sheath, marked on the skin, alongside intra-vesical pressure via a urinary catheter. Dynamometer assessments will also be performed after dissection and before closing the fascia. During the study, participants will undergo pressure and strength measurements at scheduled surgical times. Researchers will monitor abdominal pressure at several stages to compare measurement techniques and assess muscle strength for closing the abdominal wall. The primary outcome is abdominal pressure at key perioperative timepoints. The study runs from July 2026 to August 2028, with no additional long-term follow-up described.
