Birth Experiences of Women Giving Birth in French-speaking Belgium and Pathways to Choosing a Place of Birth

This research focuses on understanding the motivations behind women's choices of birthplaces in Belgium and their childbirth experiences. It aims to explore what drives women to select certain birth settings, including the idea of 'non-choice,' and gathers insights into their experiences from one month postpartum up to one year after giving birth. The study also involves discussions with birth companions and perinatal health professionals to learn about their workplace choices and practices. Participants will take part in qualitative interviews about their childbirth experiences and the reasons for their chosen place of birth. These interviews are conducted with women who have given birth in Belgium within the past year. The study collects data over approximately 40 months, focusing on birth experiences and birthplace choices. There are no treatment interventions, as this is an observational study. Women who join the study will be asked to share their childbirth stories and experiences through interviews. Researchers will collect and analyze this qualitative information throughout the study period. The main outcomes measured are the participants' childbirth experiences and their decisions regarding the place of birth. The study is open to healthy volunteers and will continue until the end of 2028, allowing for long-term observation and understanding.
