What this Trial Is About
This research aims to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates among Hispanic mothers. It evaluates whether support from Spanish-speaking peer counselors and additional funds that equalize the value of breastfeeding and formula feeding packages help mothers continue exclusive breastfeeding. The study compares mothers receiving this intervention to those who do not, focusing on breastfeeding continuation and infant growth during the first six months after birth. Participants in the intervention group are matched with Spanish-speaking peer counselors who visit weekly at the start and monthly later. In the first month, mothers can choose a $150 gift card or an electric breast pump. From months two to five, additional funds are provided based on the infant's WIC breastfeeding package status, with varying amounts for exclusive or partial breastfeeding. The control group receives usual care, including access to WIC services and peer counseling. Mothers and their infants participate from pregnancy through six months postpartum. Weekly surveys about feeding experiences are completed, and infant weight and length are measured at home twice during the first month and at two, four, and six months. Researchers monitor exclusive breastfeeding rates and infant growth as primary outcomes. The study aims to understand how the intervention influences breastfeeding success and infant health over time.
