What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the effects of a brief mindfulness intervention on pain in patients undergoing kyphoplasty or radiofrequency ablation. This randomized controlled trial aims to understand how a short behavioral technique can influence pain perception during these orthopedic procedures. The study is led by Florida State University and focuses on patients experiencing acute and chronic pain. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will receive a mindfulness pain management intervention consisting of a 2-minute introduction followed by a 5-minute audio-guided mindful breathing exercise. The other group will receive a pain psychoeducation session providing time-matched information about various pain management strategies and resources for overall well-being. This intervention is delivered before the in-clinic procedure. During the study visit, participants will complete assessments of pain unpleasantness, acute pain, and anxiety immediately before and after the 7-minute audio intervention. Treatment satisfaction will be measured at the end of the medical provider visit, about one hour later. The study will monitor changes in these outcomes to understand the impact of the mindfulness technique on pain management during orthopedic procedures.
