What this Trial Is About

Achilles tendinopathy (AT) is a common overuse injury in runners, especially those over 40 years old, due to age-related changes in tendon structure and function. This study focuses on senior runners with AT, aiming to evaluate the validity of a screening test compared to other clinical measures after applying a physiotherapy protocol. It addresses a lack of data on AT in this population to improve clinical practice and treatment strategies. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups for a 12-week home self-treatment program. Both groups perform the Alfredson exercise protocol and receive health education, while the experimental group also adds analytical stretching of the calf muscles based on the Kaltenborn-Evjenth method. The study collects clinical, ultrasound, and functional data before and after treatment to assess changes. During the study, participants will undergo initial assessments including tendon ultrasound, ankle and calcaneal mobility, and functional tests involving movement and jumping. Data on sports activity, pain, and function will be gathered using validated questionnaires. Researchers will monitor changes over 12 weeks, focusing on the total screening test score, tendon thickness, and VISA-A score. The study incorporates gender balance and analyzes results separately by sex, with a follow-up period ending at 12 weeks.
