What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery affects postural stability and balance confidence in people over 60 with severe hip osteoarthritis. The study compares two surgical approaches, Direct Anterior (DA) and Direct Lateral (DL), to understand their impact on physical and psychological aspects within the first three months after surgery. The aim is to evaluate changes in balance and quality of life following elective unilateral THA. Participants will undergo elective unilateral THA using either the DA or DL surgical approach. The study follows them for three months after surgery, assessing postural stability and balance confidence at multiple points using clinical and instrumented measures. Secondary measures include activity levels, function, pain, and quality of life, monitored regularly before and after surgery. During the study, participants will complete assessments including the Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest) and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale before surgery and at 2, 6, and 12 weeks afterward. Additional evaluations include activity scales, hip function scores, osteoarthritis questionnaires, and fall assessments. Researchers will track falls daily for 12 weeks post-surgery and measure changes in physical function and quality of life over the study period, which helps to understand recovery progress and risks.
