What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating acute left colon diverticulitis (ALCD), a common gastrointestinal disorder that mainly affects the left side of the colon. The study focuses on patients with ALCD who are treated without surgery, comparing outcomes between those admitted to surgical wards and those admitted to non-surgical medical wards. This study aims to understand differences in clinical results, length of hospital stay, and follow-up care between these two hospital settings. Participants receive non-operative management (NOM) for ALCD, which includes monitoring lab tests, fluid therapy, antibiotic treatment, abscess drainage if larger than 4 cm, and gradually restoring a regular diet. The study groups are divided based on the hospital ward patients are admitted to: either a surgical ward or a medical ward, with admission decided by bed availability. This observational study uses data collected retrospectively and compares patients matched by disease severity to reduce bias. During the study, researchers will review patient data including age, sex, body mass index, previous episodes, inflammatory markers, and treatment details. They will monitor hospital stay length and follow patients for two years to track recurrences and follow-up visits. Outcomes include hospitalization duration, clinical recovery such as symptom resolution and diet restoration, and long-term recurrence rates. The study is scheduled to complete in January 2026.

1 visit (in-person)
Duration - Up to 1 month after admission
Participants diagnosed with acute left colon diverticulitis and undergoing non-operative management (NOM) are observed during their hospital stay in either surgical or medical wards. This includes lab test monitoring, fluid therapy, antibiotic therapy, abscess drainage if needed, and restoring a regular diet.
Hospitalization with daily monitoring visits
Duration - 2 years after discharge
Participants are followed up for two years after discharge to assess clinical outcomes, including recurrences and follow-up visits.
