Observational Study on Clinical Variability in Motor Neuron Diseases Including ALS

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying the different clinical presentations of motor neuron disease MND in patients seen at the Neurology Department of the Istituto Auxologico Italiano. The study aims to identify specific clinical types of MND and understand how these types can improve knowledge of the disease mechanisms and help predict outcomes more accurately. This is an observational study without drug or treatment interventions. Participants will undergo clinical evaluations using validated scales, neurophysiological and neuroradiological assessments, and neuropsychological testing. Biological samples may also be collected for genetic testing and biomarker analysis if needed. The study focuses on observing and characterizing the disease rather than testing treatments. During the study, participants will be regularly assessed to identify various MND phenotypes at diagnosis and after one year. Researchers will track the number of patients with classic ALS, bulbar ALS, lower motor neuron LMN phenotypes like flail arm or leg, and upper motor neuron UMN phenotypes such as pyramidal ALS or primary lateral sclerosis. This monitoring will help improve understanding of disease variability and progression. The study is set to continue until the end of 2026.
