What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating whether the amount of daily screen time is linked to postoperative emergence delirium in children aged 2 to 11 years who are undergoing elective lower abdominal surgeries such as inguinal hernia repair, orchiopexy for undescended testis, or circumcision. This observational study aims to better understand if screen-related environmental factors affect behavioral recovery after surgery in pediatric patients. The study will also explore how factors like age at first screen exposure, type of screen content, parental screen use, passive screen exposure, and presence of a screen in the childs bedroom relate to postoperative agitation. Participants will not receive any active treatment rather, their daily screen exposure is measured as the main factor of interest. Parents will complete a questionnaire before surgery to report the childs screen time and related behaviors. Children will be grouped based on whether they have less than or more than 2 hours of daily screen exposure. Postoperative emergence delirium will be assessed by trained investigators using the Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium PAED scale at 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes after surgery. Throughout the study, children will be evaluated for emergence delirium severity using the PAED score at specified time points after anesthesia recovery. Clinical and sociodemographic data will also be collected to assess their influence on outcomes. The primary outcome is the association between daily screen time and PAED scores within the first 30 minutes postoperatively. Secondary outcomes include relationships between delirium and screen exposure details, parental screen use, and environmental factors. The study will help improve preoperative risk assessments and family guidance in pediatric surgical care.
