What this Trial Is About
Surgical fear involves excessive worry about surgery that can disrupt normal life and is often stronger before the procedure. Factors like past negative surgical experiences, lack of information, pain, complications, age, gender, and education can influence this fear. This fear may cause physical and psychological symptoms such as increased heart rate, dizziness, and muscle tension. Anxiety related to surgery may also arise from concerns about the operation, anesthesia, pain, or complications, especially with high-risk surgeries or past experiences. Laughter yoga, a therapy combining simulated laughter with yoga breathing techniques, is studied as a method to reduce such fear and anxiety in patients undergoing ureteroscopy. The study evaluates the effects of a single 30-minute laughter yoga session performed via WhatsApp video call before ureteroscopy. Patients in the laughter yoga group participate in exercises including warm-up, deep breathing, playful laughter, and childlike playfulness. The control group receives no intervention. Surgical fear and anxiety levels are measured 40 minutes and 5 minutes before the procedure, with laughter yoga applied between these assessments for the experimental group. Participants undergo evaluations of surgical fear and state anxiety before and after the laughter yoga session or at comparable times for the control group. Researchers use these measures to assess changes in anxiety and fear related to the ureteroscopy procedure. The study involves adult patients scheduled for ureteroscopy who can communicate and understand Turkish. The trial monitors psychological responses around the time of surgery, with total participation covering assessments shortly before the procedure on the surgery day.
