What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating how eating almonds affects skin health, focusing on collagen production, elastin levels, wrinkles, and pigmentation in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women across all Fitzpatrick skin types. This study explores the potential skin benefits of almonds, which are rich in nutrients like vitamin E and polyphenols known to combat oxidative stress and have shown benefits in previous clinical studies for skin aging and protection. Participants will be randomly assigned to consume either 60 grams (about 2 ounces) of whole almonds or a protein- and calorie-matched non-nut snack five times per week. The study lasts for 24 weeks, during which the effects on facial skin collagen, elastin, wrinkle severity, pigmentation, and related enzymes will be measured. Both groups will maintain their usual skincare routines and diets throughout the study. During the 24 weeks, participants will have their skin collagen and elastin levels quantified, wrinkle severity assessed, and pigmentation scored. Skin biopsies will be analyzed for enzymes that affect collagen breakdown and preservation, and blood samples will be collected to study advanced glycation end products. The study includes safety monitoring and aims to understand the detailed impact of almond consumption on skin aging in women aged 35 to 70 years.
