What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating whether chewing a standardized hard gum for four weeks can cause measurable changes in facial soft tissue shape in healthy adults. The study focuses on adults aged 20 to 40 and uses advanced three-dimensional facial imaging to assess facial morphology. This pilot trial aims to provide scientific evidence on the effects of masticatory muscle activity on facial appearance, particularly regarding facial definition and jawline shape. Participants will follow a prescribed chewing routine using a hard gum called Jawliner, chewing every other day for about 16 minutes per session. The chewing sessions involve controlled pace and alternating sides of the mouth to ensure consistent muscle activity. Facial images will be taken before the chewing starts, immediately after the four-week chewing period, and again after a 4 to 5-week washout phase. During the study, participants will attend three imaging visits for 3D facial scans and complete questionnaires about muscle fatigue, soreness, oral behaviors, and symptoms related to temporomandibular disorders. Researchers will analyze changes in facial soft tissue using surface mapping, heatmaps, and morphometric measures. Additional assessments include monitoring body weight, height, and various symptom questionnaires. The study lasts about 8 to 9 weeks including the washout period, with safety and adherence monitored throughout.
