What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating how visual attention to unhealthy foods, racially matching people, and the number of "likes" in social media ads relate to calorie intake among adolescents aged 13 to 17. This randomized trial aims to understand how exposure to different types of social media advertisements influences eating behavior in this age group. Participants are randomly assigned to one of eight groups exposed to various social media ads. These ads differ by featuring either Black or White people, food or non-food products, and either many or few "likes." Each participant views ads matching one of these categories, allowing researchers to compare the effects of racial congruence, food imagery, and social approval cues on calorie consumption. During about a 60-minute session on Day 0, participants' calorie intake is measured along with their visual attention to ad features, such as the first fixation, gaze duration, and number of fixations. The study includes assessments of how adolescents engage with the ads and how this relates to their eating behavior. The trial continues until September 2026, with the primary focus on immediate responses to ad exposure.
