What this Trial Is About
This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of eMOTE, a new smartphone app designed to help women experiencing binge eating episodes. Binge eating, whether formally diagnosed or at lower levels, can lead to health issues and reduced quality of life. The study is a randomized controlled trial comparing the app's impact on binge eating symptoms to a waiting list group. eMOTE is based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills and includes modules on psychoeducation, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. It also features two self-monitoring diaries for tracking food intake, behaviors, feelings, and exercises. Participants will be randomly assigned to either use the app for eight weeks or be on a waiting list for eight weeks before accessing the app. Participants will complete online questionnaires and provide their body mass index at the start, after two months, and after four months. Researchers will assess changes in binge eating episodes, eating disorder symptoms, BMI, intuitive eating, mood symptoms, compensatory behaviors, mindfulness, and emotion regulation. The study lasts at least four months, with follow-up assessments after the intervention period.
