Establishment of an Interdisciplinary Functional Neurological Disorder Treatment Program and Clinical Care Pathway at University of Alabama at Birmingham

Researchers are conducting a study to develop and evaluate an interdisciplinary treatment pathway for Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). This pathway involves multiple specialties including psychiatry, speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, aiming to improve care and publish findings about the treatment process and outcomes. The study will include both adult and pediatric patients diagnosed with FND. Participants include adults and children referred to the UAB FND clinical pathway, along with the children's parent or guardian. The study involves collecting survey responses before and after treatment, using different surveys tailored for adults, children, and parents/guardians. Patients receiving inpatient or outpatient care will have clinical data recorded during visits, including symptom frequency and clinical measures entered into electronic health records. Some participants may provide facial photos or videos before and after treatment. The study also includes retrospective data collection from past patient records. During the study, participants will complete various questionnaires assessing anxiety, depression, symptom control, quality of life, and other related measures at regular intervals. Clinical data from neurology, therapy, and psychiatry visits will be collected both prospectively and retrospectively. The research team will track patient progress using standardized assessments entered into health records. The total study duration spans multiple visits and data collection points, with no payment for participation, and standard medical care costs billed as usual.
