Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Clinical, biochemical, or imaging diagnosis of alcoholic liver disease or liver biopsy where available
- Age between 18 and 65 years old
- Controls must have normal liver ultrasound and serum liver transaminases (ALT and AST) below 40 IU/L
- Controls must have nutritional status within 20% of ideal body weight
- Controls must have no significant medical conditions requiring medication
You will not qualify if you...
- Poorly controlled diabetes mellitus with HbA1C greater than 9.5 g/dl
- Untreated hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
- Dialysis patients or those with renal disease and serum creatinine above 1.5 mg/dL
- Active intravenous drug use
- History of bowel surgery or gastric bypass surgery
- Use of medications altering muscle protein metabolism such as corticosteroids, tamoxifen, high-dose estrogen, testosterone, or anabolic steroids
- Metastatic disease
- Advanced cardiac or pulmonary disease
- Pregnancy
- Coagulopathy with INR above 1.4 and platelet count below 80,000/ml
