Evaluation of the Evolution of the Quality of Life of Patients Treated by the Spinal Pathology Department

Researchers are studying the changes in patient care practices over five years within a spinal pathology department. This observational study focuses on patients treated for various spinal conditions, including degenerative diseases of the lumbar, thoracic, or cervical spine, spine deformities, and urgent traumatic, infectious, or tumor-related spinal pathologies. The goal is to collect detailed data on how treatments and care evolve over time. The study is conducted at a single center, the spine surgery department of a university hospital in Bordeaux, France. It involves collecting patient information such as their general health, reasons for seeking care, details about their spinal condition, and its impact through self-administered quality of life and psychological questionnaires. Psychological assessments are done only when necessary as determined by the surgeon. Patients are followed for three years, with data collected quarterly over five years to observe evolving practices. Participants will have several visits including at the start, and follow-ups at 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months. During these visits, various evaluations will be done including clinical assessments, socio-demographic data collection, questionnaires on quality of life, and specific evaluations of pain and function related to the spine. The study also monitors the safety of care provided. The main outcome measured is whether patients undergo surgery, with multiple secondary outcomes focusing on clinical features, quality of life, pain, and function over the follow-up period.
