AI-Summary

What this Trial Is About

Neuropathic pain, caused by damage or disease of the somatosensory nervous system, affects about 7-8% of people worldwide and remains a significant health challenge. This research aims to find new genetic variants linked to the development of neuropathic pain by studying patients with and without this condition. The study builds on previous genetic findings from rare neuropathic disorders to better understand why only some people with nerve damage develop neuropathic pain. Participants will undergo clinical and diagnostic evaluations for different types of neuropathies, including polyneuropathy, diabetic polyneuropathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome, with or without pain. Genetic testing will be performed to compare patients across these groups. The study uses existing population data and a new registry and biobank for patients with neuropathy, collaborating internationally to include a large number of participants. During the study, participants will complete questionnaires and clinical assessments related to their neuropathic pain status. Researchers will analyze genetic variants and classify pain presence and severity using grading systems. Results will be shared regularly with hospitals, patients, and the public through various channels. The study is expected to enhance understanding of neuropathic pain mechanisms, potentially guiding future treatments.
