What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating whether a network of peer genetic coaches can help overcome barriers to genetic testing and screening among African American men with metastatic prostate cancer. This group often faces challenges such as lack of awareness, cultural beliefs, financial issues, fear of discrimination, and mistrust of healthcare, which can limit their participation in genetic testing. The study focuses on improving engagement and support in genetic counseling and testing within this community. The study includes training six African American men as peer genetic coaches who will provide education and support. Patients will receive an educational booklet and participate in discussions with these coaches to help navigate genetic testing. The research aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of this coaching approach and its impact on patients' knowledge and attitudes. Participants will be involved in educational sessions and discussions, with researchers tracking inquiries, eligibility, enrollment, and completion rates over one year. The study measures changes in decisional conflict, attitudes toward genetic counseling and testing, and genetics knowledge. Safety and participation outcomes are monitored, with the study lasting up to one year for each participant.
