What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating whether a brief, evidence-based method for screening and counseling about substance use can be integrated into routine care for adult survivors of childhood cancer. This study takes place at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital and aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of this approach within regular psychosocial visits. The pilot study also explores how well the brief intervention is delivered and whether it can help reduce substance use behaviors. Participants complete the World Health Organizations ASSIST questionnaire during a scheduled visit in the After Completion of Therapy ACT Clinic. This screening assesses use of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, prescription drugs, and other substances. Those identified with moderate or high risk and assigned to the intervention group receive a brief counseling session using motivational interviewing techniques. The intervention is designed to support healthy decision-making and is provided during the same visit. A comparison group receives screening without feedback or counseling. During the study, participants complete initial screening and may receive counseling if at risk. Follow-up surveys occur three months later to report changes in substance use. Researchers measure enrollment feasibility, screening and intervention acceptability, care coordination, and how faithfully the intervention is delivered. The total study duration averages around one year, helping determine if this approach can be practical and beneficial in routine survivorship care.
