What this Trial Is About
Researchers are conducting a prospective, longitudinal observational study to assess physical function in critically ill adult patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The study focuses on using the Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment Tool (CPAx) to monitor functional status and analyze how changes in CPAx scores might predict clinical outcomes like mortality and the length of mechanical ventilation. The study includes collecting demographic and clinical data such as age, sex, ICU admission cause, comorbidities, and clinical scores like SOFA, SAPS III, and Charlson Comorbidity Index. Adult patients admitted to the general ICU at Pedro Ernesto University Hospital (HUPE) are observed during their ICU stay. Physical function is assessed with the CPAx at ICU admission and discharge. Data on respiratory support methods, including invasive mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, and high-flow nasal cannula, as well as renal replacement therapy, extubation, and reintubation, will be recorded. The study also tracks ICU and hospital length of stay and days on mechanical ventilation. Participants will be evaluated through functional assessments at ICU admission and discharge, along with collection of clinical information during their ICU stay. Researchers will measure CPAx score changes and monitor outcomes such as hospital mortality over 12 months, mechanical ventilation days over 6 months, and ICU length of stay. Secondary measures include extubation and reintubation rates within 30 days. The study aims to better understand how physical function relates to recovery and adverse outcomes in critically ill patients.

Your Study Journey
Duration - 2 to 4 weeks
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.
1 visit (in-person)
Duration - Duration of ICU stay (minimum 48 hours)
Participants admitted to the ICU have their physical function assessed using the Chelsea Critical Care Assessment Tool (CPAX) at ICU admission and discharge, along with clinical and demographic data collection during their ICU stay.
2 assessments (at ICU admission and ICU discharge)
Duration - Up to 12 months
Participants' clinical outcomes such as hospital mortality, mechanical ventilation duration, ICU length of stay, and hospital length of stay are observed up to 12 months following ICU admission.
Follow-up assessments according to hospital records; no additional visits required
