What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating Health Without Barriers/Salud Sin Barreras (HWB/SSB), a culturally adapted, intensive health behavior and lifestyle program for adolescents aged 11 to 19 and their families in Northern Colorado. The study aims to improve health behaviors and reduce risks for chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes by refining community facilitator training, assessing the program's feasibility and acceptability, and tracking changes in adolescent health outcomes. The HWB/SSB program includes 12 sessions delivered over 6 weeks, involving mindfulness training for adolescents and parents, physical activities focused on cardio and resistance training for youth, parent education on family support, nutrition, and physical activity, and whole-family nutrition and cooking lessons. The intervention is community-delivered and encourages participation from the entire family, including siblings and caregivers, to promote healthy lifestyle changes. Participants will engage in various evaluations including surveys, focus groups, and knowledge tests for facilitators, along with attendance tracking to assess feasibility. Adolescent outcomes measured over one year include cardiometabolic health, stress management, physical activity enjoyment and confidence, healthy eating, and sleep quality. The study includes fidelity monitoring of the intervention delivery and aims to support long-term health improvements through ongoing assessments.
