What this Trial Is About
Researchers are examining how different female life stagespremenopausal, perimenopausal, and postmenopausalaffect rehydration after fasting and fluid restriction. These stages involve changes in hormone levels that influence thirst, fluid balance, and sodium regulation. The study aims to compare fluid balance across these life stages using water and electrolyte drinks. Participants will receive either a placebo beverage or an electrolyte beverage, each given as 333 mL aliquots three times over 30 minutes for a total of 1 liter. The beverages are matched for color and flavor. The study uses a randomized crossover design, where participants receive both treatments at different times. The rehydration effects are assessed after an overnight fast and fluid restriction. During the study, participants will undergo assessments including measurements of fluid balance, urine output, blood and saliva markers related to hydration and hormones, and questionnaires on energy and menopausal symptoms. Monitoring will occur up to 4 hours after beverage consumption, with safety followed for 2 to 4 weeks depending on menopausal stage. The study is sponsored by PepsiCo Global R&D and enrolls healthy females aged 18 to 60 years across different female life stages.
