Eligibility Criteria

You may qualify if you...

Registered as a rural resident with rural household registration
Aged 60 to 79 years at the time of enrollment
Resident in the household for at least 3 months and planning to stay in the local area during the trial
Have distance vision impairment (visual acuity less than 6/12 in the better eye, improving to 6/7.5 or better with glasses) and/or near vision impairment (near visual acuity less than 6/12 at 40 cm improving to 6/7.5 or better with correction)
Able to move independently with or without a walking stick
Baseline cognitive score above set cut-offs on the Chinese Mini-Mental State Examination according to education level
Willing to participate, be randomized, and follow the study protocol

You will not qualify if you...

Have glaucoma, visually significant cataracts, or history of surgery for major eye conditions
Regular use of prescription glasses or hearing aids
Serious medical illness likely to cause loss to follow-up, though mild hypertension or diabetes are allowed
Hearing loss as shown by failure to repeat at least 3 of 6 whispered words in the better ear
