What this Trial Is About

This research evaluates an evidence-based treatment for depression delivered via iPad, computer, or smartphone to clients of Adult Protective Services APS who are older adults experiencing elder neglect or self-neglect. The study aims to see if reducing depression and apathy through this treatment can help decrease elder neglect or self-neglect behaviors, while also exploring other factors that might influence depression and apathy. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups the usual APS care group, which involves in-home investigations and case management without direct psychological treatment, and the Behavioral Activation BA group, which receives eight weekly one-hour telehealth sessions guided by a community health worker. These BA sessions include education about depression, self-management techniques, problem-solving, medication adherence strategies, communication skills with healthcare providers, and relapse prevention planning. Throughout the study, participants depression, apathy, and elder neglectself-neglect behaviors are assessed at the start, after 8 weeks of treatment, and again at 3 months. Additional measures include social connection and social isolation. Researchers monitor these outcomes using questionnaires like the PHQ-9 and the Apathy Motivations Index. The total participation period covers baseline assessment, treatment, and follow-up over approximately three months.
