What this Trial Is About

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects many women and involves complex overlapping conditions including bladder, bowel, and pelvic muscle issues. This research compares nerve and pelvic muscle function between women with CPP and those without to better understand the pain. The study also looks at how musculoskeletal (MSK) health and physical activity relate to pelvic muscle function, aiming to improve future treatments for CPP. Participants include adult women diagnosed with pelvic floor disorders (cases) and a control group of women from primary care without CPP. The study uses diagnostic tests like physical exams measuring pelvic floor muscle tone, tenderness, contraction, and relaxation, as well as electromyography, ultrasound, and pressure measurements. These tests help assess pelvic muscle and nerve function in detail. Women in the study undergo comprehensive evaluations including physical exams and specialized diagnostic testing of pelvic muscles. Researchers collect data on muscle function and MSK health to identify differences between women with and without CPP. The main outcome measured is the difference in diagnostic test results, aiming to clarify pelvic muscle abnormalities. Participation involves one-time assessments with no treatment, and the study is expected to complete by October 2025.
