What this Trial Is About

The Nanshan Elderly Cohort Study (NECS) is a community-based research project focusing on adults aged 65 and older living in Nanshan, Shenzhen, China. It aims to explore how nutrition, genetics, and environmental factors relate to chronic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, obesity, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, cancer, and sarcopenia. Researchers want to better understand these diseases' causes and development in this population. Participants, who must be healthy residents living in Nanshan for over five years, will be followed approximately every three years. At each visit to the Community Healthcare Service Centre, they will undergo face-to-face interviews, physical exams including measurements like weight and blood pressure, ultrasonography scans to check arteries and organs, electrocardiogram tests to assess heart function, and collection of blood, urine, and stool samples for laboratory analysis. The study will also gather data on participants' lifestyles, dietary habits, psychological health, and family medical history. During the study, researchers will monitor participants' health status by checking metabolic, nutritional, inflammatory, hormonal, and genetic markers through laboratory tests. They will also track the occurrence of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular events, stroke, and cognitive disorders over up to 10 years. Data on mortality and disease events will be obtained from local health information systems. This extensive follow-up and data collection will help identify factors influencing chronic disease risk and progression in elderly residents.
