What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying brain responses to gentle stimulation of specific points on the ear in healthy adults without pain. The study aims to map how stimulating areas linked to the shoulder, thumb, and lumbar spine activates different brain regions, using a technique called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). This helps test theories about ear-based therapy and its effects on brain activity. Participants will have their ears lightly touched at designated points using small plastic filaments while wearing a special cap that measures brain activity with near-infrared light. The stimulation targets points related to the shoulder, thumb, and lower back, with brain responses recorded in areas responsible for sensation and cognition. This is a single-visit, non-invasive study focusing on healthy volunteers. During the visit, participants will wear the fNIRS cap and receive repeated ear stimulations while brain responses are monitored. The primary measurement compares brain activity when stimulating points for the lumbar spine versus the thumb, with additional comparisons involving the shoulder. The study observes brain function over about 10 minutes of stimulation and does not involve any long-term follow-up or treatment.
