What this Trial Is About
The trial investigates the presence of specific oncodriversPD-L1, ALK, and EGFRin patients with malignant pleural effusions associated with non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC. These oncodrivers are important for cancer treatment decisions but their prevalence in pleural fluid is unclear. This prospective, non-randomized cohort study aims to measure these oncodrivers in patients with pleural fluid cytology positive for NSCLC and explore factors affecting the detection of oncodriver status and its impact on further diagnostic work-up. Participants with pleural effusions suspected or known to be related to NSCLC will have their pleural fluid samples tested for oncodrivers. For squamous cell carcinoma, PD-L1 will be measured, while for adenocarcinoma, PD-L1, ALK, and EGFR will be tested using specific antibodies and genetic analysis techniques. The study includes a follow-up period of 8 weeks after inclusion to assess diagnostic outcomes and any additional interventions needed. During the study, participants will undergo pleural fluid sampling and analysis, with results used to determine the presence of oncodrivers. Researchers will monitor specimen adequacy, the volume of pleural fluid analyzed, and any additional diagnostic procedures such as thoracentesis or biopsies. Outcomes include prevalence of oncodriver status, correlations with sample volumes, and complications like pain, pneumothorax, or bleeding. The total follow-up duration for each participant is 8 weeks after enrollment.
