What this Trial Is About

Researchers are exploring factors that affect oral health care access and knowledge among people living with HIV (PLWH) from diverse racial, ethnic, and sexual and gender minority backgrounds. This qualitative study aims to understand barriers and supports related to oral health equity, perceptions about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, and awareness of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC/OPSCC). The study also seeks recommendations to improve access to oral health care and prevention efforts for these cancers among PLWH. Participants will take part in one study visit involving a focus group discussion lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, where they will share their experiences and views. Before this, they will complete a brief questionnaire either electronically or by phone, and be grouped with others of similar identity for the focus groups. The discussions will be recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to identify key themes. Before joining, participants will have a screening and enrollment phone call. During the study visit, they will complete the survey and participate in the focus group. Researchers will measure oral health equity factors within three days after the group sessions. The study is sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco, and will run through November 2029. Participants can expect a supportive environment to share their perspectives and contribute to improving oral health care access for PLWH.
