What this Trial Is About
This research aims to help young males aged 14 to 17 talk openly and honestly with trusted adults, including parents and other adults, about sexual health. The study focuses on promoting conversations about preventing sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, while respecting youths' privacy and empowering them to take control of their health. It evaluates communication approaches to enhance sexual health discussions between youth and adults. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. In the intervention group, youth receive a one-on-one video conversation with a specialist who conducts a sexual health assessment, provides personalized information on HIV risk reduction including PrEP, and uses motivational interviewing to address barriers to PrEP. Parents in this group complete an interactive online module with information and skills for sexual health communication and HIV prevention. The control group youth receive a similar video conversation but with didactic information only, excluding motivational interviewing. Parents in this group get brief written advice with web resources but no interactive content. Both approaches focus on behavioral intervention. During the study, researchers assess sexual health communication scores for both youth and parents after 4 weeks, as well as PrEP uptake at the same timepoint. Participants will engage in conversations and complete digital modules or read materials depending on their group. The study involves monitoring communication improvements and health prevention uptake over this 4-week period. Participation requires living in the United States and English proficiency, with no exclusion criteria beyond the inclusion requirements.
