What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying a hospital-based violence intervention called Bridging the Gap to see if it can reduce violence in adults who have been injured due to violence, such as gunshot wounds. This study aims to understand if adults receiving Bridging the Gap show more improvement compared to those who do not receive it, and to explore how the intervention might affect behaviors like firearm use, drug use, aggression, risky actions, and rates of violent re-injury. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one receiving usual treatment with a brief violence awareness brochure during their hospital stay, and the other receiving the Bridging the Gap intervention. This intervention includes an in-hospital violence prevention program combined with six months of community case management services after discharge, along with a firearm counseling program focused on risk understanding and safety practices. Adults in the study will complete questionnaires and tasks related to their behavior, trauma exposure, mental health, cognitive skills, and substance use at the start, and again at six and twelve months. Clinical interviews will also be recorded for evaluation. Researchers will collect information from medical records and criminal background checks. The study lasts up to 12 months and measures outcomes including firearm-related violence, re-injury, and mortality over that period.
