Project MILANO Understanding the Concerns and Needs of Brain Tumor Patients Who Own Pets

Researchers are exploring the challenges faced by patients diagnosed with brain tumors who also own pets. The study focuses on understanding the concerns and needs related to caring for pets when patients experience progressive neurological difficulties or face life-threatening conditions. This research highlights the importance of planning for pet care during hospitalizations or in the event of the patients death, especially for those living alone who are at higher risk of pet care issues. The study involves patients with brain tumors who own at least one pet. It uses the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale LAPS to assess the emotional bond between patients and their pets, measuring factors like the closeness of the relationship and the importance of the pet in the patients life. Participants complete a questionnaire on the first day of the study to provide insights on their concerns and needs regarding pet care. Participants will be asked to complete the LAPS scale and a questionnaire about their connection to their pets and their concerns for the pets future care. The study team will analyze these responses to understand better how pet care planning can be supported for patients with brain tumors. The research is observational, with no treatment interventions, and aims to collect data during a single visit. The total participation time is limited to the duration of the questionnaire and scale completion.
