Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Aged 18-49.
- Score less than 24 on the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool.
- Foot and Ankle Ability Measure Activities of Daily Living score 90 or less and Sports score 80 or less indicating ankle-foot impairment and activity limitation.
- Able to attend treatment sessions for approximately 6 weeks.
- Passed most recent physical fitness test (active duty only).
- History of a first-time ankle sprain causing activity limitation for at least one day, with injury 2-6 weeks before consent (for acute lateral ankle sprain).
- History of at least one significant ankle sprain within 12 months that interrupted physical activity for 1 or more days.
- Most recent ankle sprain occurred 2-12 weeks before enrollment.
- History of the injured ankle "giving way," recurrent sprain, or feelings of instability (for chronic ankle instability).
- About to start care with physical therapy.
You will not qualify if you...
- Unable to walk at study enrollment.
- Non-removable casting.
- Previous surgeries to bones, joints, or nerves in the lower limbs.
- History of fracture in lower limbs requiring realignment.
- Acute injury to other lower limb joints within 3 months causing physical activity interruption.
- Pregnant.
- Disability due to neuromuscular, neurological, or vestibular impairments affecting balance.
- Connective tissue disorders like Marfan Syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
- Planning to separate from the military within 12 months (excluding normal retirement), pending medical evaluation board, medical discharge, or involved in injury-related litigation.
