Assessment of the Efficacy of Hemodialysis on Uric Acid Clearance at End Stage Kidney Disease in Sohag University Hospital

Researchers are investigating the effectiveness of hemodialysis alone in clearing uric acid from the blood in patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. The study focuses on patients receiving 2 to 3 dialysis sessions per week and aims to understand if additional uric acid-lowering treatment is needed. This observational study takes place at Sohag University Hospital and includes adult patients aged 18 or older who have been on hemodialysis for at least three months. The study observes patients dialyzed using a Fresenius 4008S generator with polysulfone synthetic membranes and bicarbonate dialysate. Dialysis adequacy is assessed by specific calculations involving urea clearance and session duration. Uric acid clearance is measured before and after dialysis sessions to determine the efficacy of the treatment, classified as low, moderate, or good based on percentage reduction thresholds. The study collects clinical and demographic data and analyzes various factors such as vascular access, session duration, blood flow, and residual kidney function. Participants undergo blood sampling five minutes before and after dialysis to measure serum uric acid levels. Researchers also collect information on health status, comorbidities, and dialysis parameters. The primary outcome is the study of serum uric acid levels during 2 to 3 hour dialysis sessions. Data analysis will evaluate the relationship between treatment factors and uric acid clearance, helping to inform the potential need for supplementary therapies. The study is planned to last six months and includes 100 patients.
